Planned Parenthood
Consider the Facts
▸ Planned Parenthood is the leading promoter and largest provider of abortion in the country, performing 332,278 abortions in 2009. That accounts for more than 27% of all abortions in the U.S.
▸ Planned Parenthood’s abortion numbers increased by about 2.5% in 2009, while their prenatal services dropped by 25% and their adoption referrals dropped by 59%.
▸ Planned Parenthood’s income in 2009 exceeded $1.1 billion, including $363 million in federal grants and contracts in 2009.
▸ Since 1985, Planned Parenthood has received nearly $6 billion from the federal government.
▸ Planned Parenthood of Indiana performed 5,580 abortions in 2010, accounting for more than 50% of all abortions in Indiana.
▸ In Indiana, Planned Parenthood’s income was $15.6 million, including more than $2 million in federal and state grants and contracts in 2010.
Isn’t Planned Parenthood’s purpose to provide health care to women?
Planned Parenthood officials claim that their goal is to protect women’s health, but their tax filings indicate that their mission is to achieve “a U.S. population of stable size.” Planned Parenthood was founded by Margaret Sanger, a radical eugenicist who believed that something needed to be done, by force if necessary, to limit the reproduction of the “inferior classes.” According to Sanger’s writings, the inferior classes included “the feeble-minded, the mentally defective, the poverty-stricken.” Even today, Planned Parenthood’s most prestigious award is named after Margaret Sanger, who once wrote, “the most merciful thing a large family does to one of its infants is to kill it.”
Doesn’t Planned Parenthood want to reduce the number of abortions?
Planned Parenthood thrives on abortion; it is their largest source of income from services. They are becoming increasingly committed to abortion by actively and aggressively opposing any and all limitations or restrictions on access to abortion, including parental consent laws and even regulations intended to make abortion safer for women.
Planned Parenthood says that abortions are only 3% of their services.
When Planned Parenthood uses the 3% figure, they are comparing the number of abortions with the number of other services they provide, such as pregnancy tests or breast exams. It isn’t an outright lie, but it is very misleading. It’s like a hospital comparing the number of brain surgeries performed with the number of flu shots given. Let’s say they give 1,600 flu shots, and perform 50 brain surgeries. Does it sound reasonable to say that brain surgeries account for only 3% of their services? Another way to look at it would be to compare Planned Parenthood’s income from abortions to that of all the other services they provide. Then, abortions account for about 40% of their total services. This number gives you a more realistic view of Planned Parenthood’s involvement with abortion.
Planned Parenthood says they offer a pregnant woman all the options.
If they do, they don’t offer them with equal emphasis. Of all the pregnant women who visited a Planned Parenthood office in 2009, 97.6% of them were sold abortions. A visit to Planned Parenthood’s website clearly reveals how Planned Parenthood sells abortion over the alternatives of raising a child or placing a child for adoption. The site details the potential difficulties with adoption and child rearing, but says almost nothing about the difficulties, dangers, and consequences of abortion.
But doesn’t Planned Parenthood also provide adoption services?
In 2009, Planned Parenthood performed 332,278 abortions and referred only 977 women for adoption nationwide. That means that adoptions accounted for less than one-hundredth of 1% of their services. Clearly, they do not give equal emphasis to adoption. In Indiana, Planned Parenthood referred only 5 women for adoptions in 2010 compared to 5,580 abortions. That’s less than one-tenth of 1%. Furthermore, Planned Parenthood’s adoption referrals are declining every year.
Planned Parenthood says that by defunding Planned Parenthood, women would lose access to the very basic health care they need.
The new Indiana law simply prevents any organization that performs abortions from being a Medicaid provider. But that doesn’t deny health care to women who qualify for Medicaid. In fact, no one will be denied Medicaid assistance under the new law. It simply means they will have to go to a provider other than Planned Parenthood.
If Planned Parenthood is denied Medicaid funds, where will women go for health care?
Planned Parenthood wants you to believe that they are the only facility that can provide Medicaid services. But the new Indiana law does not change Medicaid recipients’ benefits; it changes only where they receive their benefits. The truth is that any Medicaid-approved doctor or health clinic can provide the same services that Planned Parenthood provides. In addition, there are hundreds of non-Medicaid facilities throughout Indiana that provide quality, low-cost health care. Planned Parenthood is not indispensable. Furthermore, the new law does not prevent them from providing any of the services they now provide, including abortion.
Planned Parenthood says they don’t use federal funds to pay for abortions.
Not directly, but any money going to Planned Parenthood will help support all aspects of the organization, including their abortion business. Accounting procedures allow funds to be separated in the official record so it appears that income from a specific source will be used only to pay for a specific expense. But, in the real world, it simply doesn’t matter. Any money they receive from the government subsidizes the organization and helps them provide abortions.
Planned Parenthood says that most women feel relieved after having an abortion.
This is a clear attempt to deceive women. According to Planned Parenthood’s website, “serious, long-term emotional problems after abortion are rare.” That simply isn’t true. Numerous studies have shown that most women suffer long-term psychological distress after having an abortion. A 2006 study published in the Journal of Child Psychiatry and Psychology showed that, after having an abortion, women have increased rates of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, suicidal behaviors, and substance use disorders. Planned Parenthood also denies or downplays the many studies that show risks to future pregnancies, infertility, infection/hemorrhage, and other serious potential side effects of abortion. They even go so far as to claim that the long-term effects of abortion are “positive.”
Planned Parenthood says that their services help decrease the number of abortions and reduce teen pregnancies.
The number of abortions performed by Planned Parenthood has increased steadily. And Planned Parenthood admits that they have no studies to prove any reduction of teen pregnancy in the municipalities that have Planned Parenthood clinics.
Planned Parenthood clinics have been caught repeatedly trying to cover up statutory rape, prostitution, sex trafficking, and other illegal activities.
In 2003, a caller presenting herself as a 13-year-old girl impregnated by her 22-year-old boyfriend called a number of Planned Parenthood clinics throughout the country. More than 90% of those clinics agreed to conceal the likelihood that this was a case of statutory rape. Many went so far as to coach the girl in obtaining a judicial bypass to escape state parental-involvement laws. Since, then many similar sting operations have exposed Planned Parenthood clinics that were willing to cover up illegal activities. Planned Parenthood has been investigated by state and local authorities in Kansas, Indiana, and Ohio for not reporting cases of statutory rape and child sex abuse.
The Bottom Line
Planned Parenthood is a deplorable and morally corrupt organization operating under the guise of providing women’s health services. But their true agenda is far more sinister and has never wavered from that of its founder and still heroine, Margaret Sanger, who believed in limiting the reproduction of certain “inferior classes.” In order to pull off that deception, Planned Parenthood needs to provide some services that are perceived as beneficial so they can appear to be a benevolent organization. That’s why there are women who have had positive experiences at Planned Parenthood. If you choose not to believe what you have read here, we simply ask that you do your own research. A thorough look into the background and operation of Planned Parenthood will reveal some shocking truths. So, we encourage you to find out for yourselves, even though Planned Parenthood would not want you to dig too deep.
